In Search of the Holy Bibles

I thought I was going to lose my mind today. I knew somewhere in this house I moved into a few years ago was my mother's Holy Bibles. I remembered they were in a box with her hair brush, the one that I stopped using on her once I realized it was removing clumps of hair due to the chemo and radiation treatments for lung, liver, and bone cancer. How could I possibly lose my mother's Bibles and hair brush?! Can't I remember where I put everything over the past 25 years?!

I have so few possessions that once belonged to my mother. After she died in 1986, my father went through her things and distributed them among my aunts and some of my mother's close friends, without any of us kids knowing. Yeah, grief does "funny" things to people. My sister saved the Bibles and hair brush for me, thank goodness.

I didn't have to tear apart the house too bad. Turns out, I just put these items in a "better" box and put the box on the very top shelf of my home office.

In the larger Bible, I found sympathy cards that people had sent me almost ten years ago when my dogs died from a poisonous vet drug. If you think gestures like sending sympathy cards to those who are grieving don't really mean anything, think again. People like me will save them for life. Sympathy cards are so comforting no matter how many years after someone has lost a loved one. Please don't be someone who doesn't acknowledge a family member's death, human or animal. How to Organize Craft or Gift Basket Supplies

Here it is, the first of the year, when a lot of us are looking for ways to get our offices organized or get clutter under control, or maybe even spruce up our crafting space. It can be challenging trying to figure out good ways to do this, that is for sure, AND stay on budget.

Being a gift basket designer doesn't mean I've always been so organized. My merchandise has always been neatly arranged on shelves, but my gift basket finishing materials were accumulating in bins, big baskets, or cardboard boxes on the floor. I felt stressed instead of feeling joyfully creative because my surroundings were not conducive to a good working environment. And, of course, everything was not looking pretty.

After spending hours online and physically shopping, looking for ribbon storage for countless rolls of ribbon, I could never find anything that would work. I'm not a hobbyist, so my needs are greater than others. I didn't have the luxury of shelves in a closet because there is no closet in my workshop. I also didn't want all the gorgeous spools of ribbon and cellophane hidden in drawers or in a cabinet because then I wouldn't know from a quick glance what supplies I was running low on or what colors I might like to add to my ever-growing collection.

After many trips to Lowe's to buy how-to-organize-a-room magazines, still nothing clicked. Like a lot of crafters and designers, I have some serious money invested in my supplies, so I was looking for an inexpensive way to get myself organized once and for all. I'm not joking when I say it took me a couple years to figure out a solution that I could live with.

For about $100, I was able to organize my gift basket "finishing station," mostly using materials and storage options I already had. My finishing station is not the area where I create my gift baskets and can spread out while doing so; this is the area that stays spotless while I wrap my baskets in cellophane and add the bow and all the finishing touches.

From Lowe's, we purchased white pegboard and installed it over the 2 x 4s of an open staircase, thereby closing off one side of the staircase and creating a wall. Inexpensive white shelves and metal shelving brackets (also from Lowe's) were mounted into studs through the pegboard. Thin dowel rods (Lowe's again!) for rolls of cellophane were suspended by pegboard hooks into the pegboard. Some pegboard hooks we purchased at Lowe's but others we purchased at Ace Hardware. Scissors and wire cutters were hung off to the side in a small area of the pegboard by pegboard hooks. A small folding table and folding chair were added to create a desk area. I already had these.

An old, inexpensive white closet organizer with wire sliding drawers was moved to one side of the folding table to hold supplies like my heat gun, glue gun, pull bows, bubble wrap, small sheets of cardboard, etc. On the top of this organizer I have space for my curling ribbon rack, my business cards, and a cute white tiger cup to hold pens and pencils. Mounted to the pegboard above this unit, I have a small metal cabinet with multiple drawers that holds rubber bands, brads, and other little doodads. On the side of this organizer I have mounted a clipboard for taking notes or for keeping track of inventory.

My paper cutter hangs by hooks on the pegboard to the left of the folding table. Organza ribbon rolls are hung on pegboard rods. Underneath the paper cutter is a beautiful basket that holds some of my gift basket reference and inspiration books.

All of my cloth ribbon spools are organized by color and are kept loose so I can grab what I want at any time and not disturb neighboring spools.

Here's another view of what this small, compact area looks like. Everything has its place and stays neat and clean.

I hope I have provided some inspiration to help you organize your crafting space or gift basket supplies. You don't have to be rich like Candy Spelling and have several gift-wrapping rooms and a craft room where you can be creative, complete your tasks, and stay organized. You can use materials you already have and purchase what you don't at Lowe's or other home-improvement stores to make the space you do have work for your individual needs.

Gift Basket Shopping? Some Things You Should Know.

A gift basket is a gift basket is a gift basket; right? Wrong!

If you're looking to give a gift basket to a friend, family member, volunteer, client, business prospect, etc., price shouldn't be your main concern. Price is important, of course, but you've probably asked yourself: Why does one basket cost more than another? How come these people are wanting me to pay so darn much? After all, how hard can it be to throw a few items in a basket, wrap it up, stick a bow on it, and deliver it?

There's much more to "it" than you'd ever think, and let me tell you why.

Not just anyone can pilot a jumbo jet, and not just anyone can or should put together a gift basket. All gift baskets are not created equal. Shop wisely. The old saying, "You get what you pay for" certainly applies here, especially when it comes to making a good impression on a potential client or business associate.

A gift basket professional spends many years learning about and refining his or her craft. Note the use of the word "professional" as there are many amateurs who think they know about what goes into the makings of a gift basket.

A professional attends trade shows in or out of their state and pays dues to belong to various organizations to acquire and keep their certifications. A professional subscribes to trade journals and magazines. Many takes classes on design and floral arranging and learn about the use of colors and textures, and much, much more. They're always on the lookout for new and unique items to present to their customers and their gift recipients. Why? Because this is their job. While you may find an occasional food or gift item in a gift basket that you can purchase yourself from a big-box store or grocery store, your gift basket should be filled with gourmet treats and keepsake gifts that can only be purchased by someone in the trade.

When you're purchasing a gift basket, not only are you purchasing a basket or container that's made of quality materials, you're purchasing every bit of its contents, both inside and out. You're purchasing sometimes quite a bit of the professional's time. There's shopping involved, there's assembly involved (because there is no "throwing" items in a basket; all items need to stay secure in their place by using things such as tape, ribbon, glue dots, skewers), and sometimes quite concentrated time involved in making sure an unwrapped fragile item doesn't get broken in transit. Nothing's worse than your gift recipient receiving a gift that is broken.

Once the gift basket is completely assembled and wrapped in cellophane or tulle (a fine netting), or shrink-wrapped, the remaining finishing touches come next. Are you purchasing a bow that resembles how you tie a bow on your shoes or are you purchasing a hand-tied bow that your recipient thinks is so beautiful, they don't want to unwrap their gift? Then when they do unwrap it, they'll be proud to reuse the bow on another gift or use it within their own home.

Curling ribbon or other enhancements complete the gift as well as a handwritten (hopefully) gift card with your personal sentiments affixed to the basket. Some gift basket companies provide computer-generated gift cards. Not very personal. Be sure they know how to spell all the words and your name on the card!

A gift basket must be securely wrapped for travel, either by a courier or UPS or FedEx. A sturdy box is chosen, and materials such as "puffed air" bags, bubble wrap, and blank sheets of newsprint paper are used to keep the basket from shifting during transit. Think Jim Carrey as the delivery driver in "Ace Ventura" kicking a box down the street so that it's barely recognizable once it's left on the customer's doorstep. What potential for a disaster!

A gift basket professional takes into account that even if a damaged box is received by your gift recipient, what's in it is still in perfect condition. Your gift basket must arrive at its destination looking as pristine as it was once the gift basket professional placed it in its shipping box.

Billing and tracking information is provided to the customer, and followup is made by the professional to make sure your gift was successfully received at its destination.

Phew! Does all this make you tired? This is another reason to allow a professional to assist you with your gift-giving needs.

In case you're wondering, the photograph above is one of my custom sympathy gift baskets. I actually lost track of how many hours I put into this gift basket between shopping for all its special components, including a custom photograph, and making it as beautiful and as perfect for the gift recipient as I could. Tying the bow alone took me at least a half hour. But this is what I do. This is what I love to do for my friends and customers. THIS is what you should expect from your gift basket professional to get your money's worth.

Rescuers Rainbow Bridge Poem

Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.

It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often.

He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.

One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for awhile to explain it to him.

"You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He entered rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge."

The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person, and among the older animals a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life.

"Watch, and see," said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together.

"What happened?"

"That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place with families on earth across The Rainbow Bridge."

"I think I like rescuers,” said the first animal.

"So does GOD," was the reply.

Should I Send Flowers or Food or a Keepsake Gift After a Death?

The answer to this question depends on the type of relationship you have with the one who is grieving.

Any type of gift received is better than receiving nothing at all. Receiving a sympathy card is better than receiving nothing at all. Sending an e-card in many cases is absolutely free. When we don't somehow reach out to someone who is grieving, it makes the pain the grieved is feeling that much worse.

Those who are grieving don't like feeling alone in their grief. Extending a kind gesture, whether it's by placing a telephone call, writing an e-mail, sending a handwritten note, sending flowers, sending a gourmet food or fruit basket, or sending a keepsake gift, is always welcome and appreciated.

I created the Kindred Spirits Gift Shop after my dogs Tasha and Niki died many years ago. My grief was inconsolable. 2010 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Sarah's Angels collection by Pavilion Gift Company. If you're an angel lover, chances are you have at least one Sarah's Angels figurine in your grouping of angel collectibles.

In 2002 when I lost my beloved dogs Tasha and Niki to a poisonous veterinary product, I searched high and low for angels with dog memorabilia. Displaying photographs of my dogs on my desk, even though I could not put them away, would make me cry if I looked at them. Once I received my first Sarah's Angels, Ellaine, as a gift from my sister for Christmas, I started to feel that my dogs were with my angels in Heaven and could start the slow healing process through my grief. In fact, receiving my first Sarah's Angels planted a seed in my head that one day I would like to own a gift shop where I offered sympathy gifts to pet lovers.

Angels are spiritual messengers bringing God's love and protection in many ways. God gives His angels charge over us as guardian angels. Little did I know that the Ellaine figurine would become the starting point of my Sarah's Angels angel with animals collection.

If you're anything like me, you are wanting to create a nice display area to show off your angel collection. Happily, I had a lovely wrought iron shelving unit in my home that I snatched from other room, and placed it in the Kindred Spirits Gift Shop office. It's now become a shrine, so to speak, to my angel dogs and my dogs now, Abby and Casey. As I add more angel figurines to my collection, I'll, of course, have to come up with another arrangement using "lifts" and "levels" to maximize my display space, but this works for now.

Recently a potential customer called and asked if one of our angel figurines could be purchased somewhere else, like a Hallmark store. The answer to this was "perhaps."

Whether you will find your desired item in a brick-and-mortar store -- someone who has an actual storefront as opposed to selling online -- all depends on what merchandise the buyer for a particular store selects for their store. Then if they do happen to carry it, will it be in stock?

You can take the time to call around to various stores in your area to see if they have your desired item and, if so, make the trek to the store to buy it. But then how much time in your daily schedule did you save when you can literally purchase a gift online in minutes? How much money did you spend in gas to get to the store? Did you have to pay sales tax on that item? If you're purchasing online and the online retailer is not in your state, you do NOT have to pay sales tax. That's a savings to you right there.

The Kindred Spirits Gift Shop will not carry merchandise that you can find at your local Walmart and the like. If you find something similar, the quality won't be there. We specialize in unique, hard-to-find items that are only available to retailers. We attend the major gift shows only open to retailers. We've already done the major shopping for you.

Remembering My Angel Mother

Today is July 18th. I'll never forget the date. It is -- or do we say "was"? -- my mother's birthday.

My 25th birthday was the worst in my life knowing that any day my mother would be gone from the cancer that invaded her lungs, liver, and bones. From the date of diagnosis to when she passed was a mere six weeks. The fact that she would die one day from cancer was never a surprise. She had been a heavy smoker of Pall Mall cigarettes her entire life.

I have used this photo of my mom and I in my Mother's Day newsletter this year. It is one of my favorites. Sitting on the sofa, holding my Chrissy doll, clearly I enjoyed her company and was so enamored with her. She was such a good mother. Unfortunately, this is one of the few photos I have of the two of us together. Too bad we didn't have digital cameras back then, because I'm sure more family pictures would have been taken, period.

So get to snapping those pictures of your mother and let her know how much you love her any chance you get.

Introduced in 2006, "Angel With Dog" is the featured angel in our "Angels Among Us" gift basket benefitting one of our nonprofit charities, Meisha's Hope IMHA/AIHA Fund #338 with Morris Animal Foundation. The Gift of Playtime

Work deadlines, bills to pay, laundry piling up, a dirty house . . . sometimes it can all be so overwhelming that you don't even know where to begin the day. And it's not even the weekend yet.

Carve out a few hours of the day to do something you absolutely love, something you haven't done in quite a while. I'm sure you know what that is!

For instance, I love to sew and machine-embroider. I taught myself how to sew on a $200 Singer. I love sewing so much, when it was time to replace my Singer, I made the leap and purchased one of the best machines in the industry, something that would pay the mortgage for many months. I am not doing that machine justice!

Try not to feel guilty that there are things that need your attention and you just don't want to deal with them. It's okay to be an "adult," and walk away from the obligations for a few hours and do what you want to do. Dust off that sewing machine or bike, or whatever you haven't touched in a while, and go play. When your mind and body returns to a peaceful state, you'll be able to handle all those built-up tasks with gusto.

I'm taking my own advice today. This is a gift I am giving to myself, some therapy time, some Me time. Everything else can wait.

A "Sunny" Mindset

It's St. Patrick's Day, and today is another gorgeous sunny springlike day in Colorado. For some reason I awoke to thoughts of sunflowers. I was particularly drawn to this photograph of a very healthy sunflower facing towards the sun, set against a bright blue sky with fluffy clouds, towering above its neighboring sunflowers.

This sunflower is a gentle reminder of the great joy and potential each and every one of us can possess in our lives every day. I feel it is especially important to continually remind ourselves of what we are grateful for and safeguard ourselves from thoughts of doom and gloom, remove ourselves from toxic environments and people, and shield ourselves from all negativity and the negative attitudes of others.

Thoughts are things. You are what you think about. Focus on what you do that is positive. Remember to value your contribution to the world. Believe in your courage, your strength, your beauty, and most of all yourself.

Your success in life will emerge and soar above the rest, just like this sunflower. It is just a matter of cultivating a "sunny" mindset.

Spiritual Gifts in Uncertain Times

I'm sure most of us are wondering where we can further curb our spending habits and save money. We can purchase our "essentials" at the big-box stores like Wal-Mart and Target to minimize our grocery bill. We can brew our own coffee every morning instead of visiting our local Starbucks for a coffee fix. Perhaps we can't afford the gym membership anymore, so we're exercising outdoors and enjoying the fresh air with our loved ones and with our dogs.

For our customers who have watched the Kindred Spirits Gift Shop evolve over the last few years, you've probably noticed how we've expanded and especially expanded our area of focus. We had our logo and Web site redesigned and had our tag line changed to better fit the times and reflect the products we now offer.

When we're anxious about what's going on in the world, many of us will turn to spirituality to help us get our mind off our troubles. It’s okay to shop for spiritual gifts to treat ourselves and remind ourselves that we do have the inner strength to get through these uncertain times.

Kindred Spirits Gift Shop's Charity Program

As The Pet Guardian, it's always been important to me that people are aware of what can happen to their pets. I don't want anybody to ever go through what I did when I lost my dogs Tasha and Niki.

When I decided to launch the Kindred Spirits Gift Shop, I knew I wanted to "give back" and help the animals. No matter what's happening in our world, the policy here remains: 5 percent of all purchases from the Kindred Spirits Gift Shop is donated to three nonprofit animal-based charities: Angel's Gate Hospice for Animals, Companion Animal Protection Society, and Meisha's Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at Morris Animal Foundation. For two of the shop's nonprofits, 25 percent of a specially-designated gift basket is donated to that organization. Our third charity gift basket will be forthcoming sometime this year.

Some people don't understand why I'd choose to "give away" 5 percent (or 25%) of the shop's bottom line. Setting aside my deeply personal reasons, here's why:

Organizations such as animal shelters and rescues -- really any organization that deals with the health and welfare of animals -- are especially in need of funding given the state of our economy. There are more animals, higher costs to care for them, and the funding is just not there like it used to be. The animals will continue to suffer if we don't step up and give.

There are volunteer opportunities. There are also plenty of ways to give back by going online and donating or shopping with e-tailers who donate for you. When going through the checkout process with the Kindred Spirits Gift Shop, please be sure to click on one of the charities so your donation can be directed there. It's that simple.

When is it Not Appropriate to Give a Sympathy Gift?

There is NEVER an excuse to not acknowledge the death of a loved one with someone you know, whether it's a human or a pet.

I wonder how many friendships/relationships get scarred or end because of someone's careless disregard for the feelings of someone who is grieving?

Death is hard on everyone, even if you've never been through it personally. But one day, unfortunately, you will experience the death of a friend or a loved one because that's just part of life. Knowing that doesn't make it any easier; that's just the way it is.

You may not know what to say to the person who is hurting, so you say nothing. This is as bad as saying something totally inappropriate while trying to make the bereaved feel better. You can be so choked up inside, so afraid that you will burst out crying because you, too, miss the wonderful soul who is now gone, feel so much for the person who is grieving, so worried about what to say, but all that is needed is something as simple as "I am so sorry for your loss." Period. Even if you can't bring yourself to actually verbalize those words, a simple sympathy card or short handwritten note by you will more than suffice.

Our economy has affected so many of us on so many levels. I've personally walked around with only one dollar in my wallet for a month. On more than one occasion. Money's tight, no doubt about it. But gift-giving CAN be free.

A really great gift that doesn't cost a dime is the gift of listening. Write a note, send a sympathy card, and offer the gift of your time to sit and listen to your friend or loved one just talk. A "I know you are hurting. I am here for you" goes a long, long way. Trust me on this. This person may never take you up on your offer, but they will certainly remember the kindness you extended. If they do take you up on your offer, you can be sure that one day when you're in your time of need, they will return the favor. You will want someone on your side who has "been there."

The gift of listening should have no expiration date. The first year is the worst as the person who is grieving is reliving all the "anniversaries" and remembering what was happening at that certain time of the year the previous year. Losing a loved one can take years to get over, and some of us never get over our losses. We do, however, learn to get "around" our losses. Please be patient, kind, and compassionate in the meantime.

My mother was the most important person in my life. She was my best friend. 22 years later, and I miss her dearly. I was so attached to her that I feared her death from before I was five years old. Relatives told me it was because we were separated once when I went into the hospital as a baby to recover from the croup. For as long as I could remember, I dreaded the day my mother would leave me. My mother died soon after my 25th birthday. It was THE worst time of my life.

One year, on one of the anniversaries of my mother's death, I was quiet and sad. What was wrong with me, my then-boyfriend wanted to know. So I told him. The worst response in the world he could have ever said was, "She's dead. So what? Get over it!" In total disbelief, I didn't know how to respond because I'm not the type of person who will retaliate with "I can't wait for YOUR mother to die so you can know what it feels like." Instead I said, "Well, I see this is another topic we can't discuss," and proceeded to "file" that moment away in my head. Of course the file cabinet in my head got full -- with that being the first clear, defined moment I knew I couldn't trust this person with my whole heart -- that eventually the relationship ended. Yes, I received an apology. But too late. The damage was done. Forever.

Another point in my adult life after losing my dogs Tasha and Niki, I was talking on the telephone about my devastation with a long-time friend of mine. Because she had no point of reference and had never known the unconditional love of a pet, I guess the conversation got too uncomfortable for her -- it didn't seem to matter that it was my heart that had been ripped into a million pieces -- and she callously said, "Can we change the subject?" and went on to whatever was more important for her.

Yep, I've known some real "gems" in my life, but I embrace the lessons I learned from them, the scars I received, and now embrace the person I am because of them.

Giving a gift doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Giving a gift of the heart is so rewarding, is memorable, and is absolutely free. Never forget there is someone you know who needs you during their time of loss but might be too proud to ask. They shouldn't have to ask. Just reach out and let them know you care.

Courage For The Cure

Being home sick for the good part of two weeks with a virus that seems to be popping up everywhere this winter, I've had a lot of time on my hands to be cranky and depressed and just all around feeling crummy. I know we all can't be at the top of our game all the time, but that's not easy for someone like me who always likes to be productive. Maybe it's a woman thing, I don't know.

Getting sick is the body's way of saying slow down. When you don't listen, it's going to stop you dead in your tracks, whether you have the time to be sick or not. Too bad! Being sick brought out the petulant baby in me, and I haven't liked her.

I have had some bursts of energy while being sick, though. I accomplished something I'm proud of, something that made me feel good, something that is going to bring a lot of "Pink Ribbon ladies" comfort, something that will remind them always that they are loved and cared for and supported: my Courage For The Cure Gift Basket.

While I was inspired and still energetic, I also created my Serenity For Nurses Gift Basket, for the sometimes underappreciated and underpaid earth angels who do so much to give us comfort when we find ourselves facing some challenging times with our health.

It is my hope that the special women in your life love the gift baskets as much as I enjoyed creating them. May they bring peace, hope, and encouragement to all who receive them.

Once again I find myself humbled by the latest message I received by being sick and having to slow down for a while. I'm extremely lucky that my prescriptions should have me back to feeling great in no time. I know other people aren't so lucky.

The petulant baby is gone and is finally going to sleep well tonight.

Flowers vs. Keepsake Gifts and Gift Baskets

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, most gift givers will go the flowers route. Really, what holiday or occasion would beautiful, fragrant flowers not be appropriate? And who doesn’t love flowers? But will the flowers be remembered after the occasion? Sorry to say, probably not, especially in times of grief.

With flowers, there’s usually not a whole lot of thought and time involved in choosing them. That makes them an old standby. The novelty of receiving flowers wears off minutes after they’re put in a vase and placed on a table or on the kitchen counter, which is a sad reality for the gift giver who just spent a chunk of change purchasing them. Then, too, the recipient is left with another vase to add to her stockpile, until the stockpile is sold at a garage sale for pennies or put in the recycle bin.

In our challenging economic times, flowers can be a frivolous indulgence. However, the act of giving doesn’t have to fall by the wayside. Life’s events should be acknowledged and/or celebrated. One should be able to enjoy giving gifts, as usual, even if one is on a strict budget.

It's Christmas Every Day

One of the many reasons I entered the gift and gift basket business is because I’m creative and I love working with my hands. I love to sew, although I rarely get to sew these days. I love working with colors, with beautiful fabrics, and with ribbon especially.

But I’m genuinely interested in my customers. I want to know all about them, their families, their pets – whether alive or in Spirit -- how they heard about my Web sites, whom the gifts are for, and what the occasion is. The idea that they’ve chosen my gifts to express themselves is wonderful and makes my “work” worthwhile. To know that a percentage of your purchases will help the animals is so fulfilling to me and keeps the legacy of Tasha and Niki, my angel dogs, alive.

Yes, you’re going to receive e-mails from me. And it’s not because I’m bored, trust me. I want your orders to be handled exactly the way you’d like. I will track your shipments as if I’m eagerly anticipating receiving them myself. And I do worry about shipments until I know they are safe and secure in your hands or that of your gift recipients. This to me is what customer service is all about.

I’m so passionate about what I do that it keeps me up at night, wakes me up in the middle of the night, and wakes me up early in the morning. If I don’t get my ideas down on paper right away, I’ll never get any sleep.

Receiving an order from a customer makes me smile every time. And I thank God, out loud, for that. It’s like Christmas for me every day when new merchandise arrives. I am always so excited for you to see what I’ve found. I attend at least two major gift shows every year to keep up with the trends and seek out new and unique merchandise – something you are not going to find in most stores and certainly not in the “Big Box” stores.

Inspired by the Pink Ribbon Ladies

The Internet can be a great social tool. Over the last couple of months, I’ve been so fortunate to have reconnected with some of my old friends, one of them my good friend Sue from high school 30 years ago. Another, Joel, via an e-mail sent to him by a mutual friend named Ione. All three of these friends have something in common: their lives have somehow been touched by breast cancer, either through family members, friends, or themselves.

Back in 2000 when I lived in Atlanta, I heard a radio advertisement for the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. I started to cry. It took me years to acknowledge that when I’m touched by something that makes me want to cry, I have to get involved in some way. So sure enough, I signed up for the Lake Lanier to Atlanta 3-Day Walk that took place September 22nd through 24th, 2000.

Like a lot of walkers, I’m sure, my first thought was, Hey, I’ll lose a pound or two (I didn’t), I’ll raise money for cancer research (I did), and I’ll meet some great people (I did!). Our walking group, of which Joel and Ione were a part, met religiously every Saturday for six months and trained. Of course we trained on our own during the week. If anyone is thinking they want to sign up for the Avon walk now – no longer 3-day walks – you had better train for it. If you think walking a marathon a day – or 20 miles a day for three days back then – is a “walk in the park,” you will quickly learn otherwise. I felt bad for the few men here and there who signed up to walk for their wives or moms or sisters and didn’t train at all. These men didn’t even make it through the first day!

But then again, out of like 2,600 or so walkers, we lost about 700 of us after the first day/evening because, of all things, we just happened to walk through Hurricane Opal! And all we thought we had to worry about during our training period was keeping hydrated so we didn’t faint, and keeping our feet from getting blistered in the scorching Atlanta heat! Wrapping our feet in Zip-Loc bags and duct tape before putting on countless fresh pairs of socks, we learned, does wonders!

The first day of our event was truly nightmarish. Our camp for the night couldn’t be set up because the campground had been flooded with at least a foot of water. No food, water, and port-a-potties could be delivered. One of the two port-a-potties that had been delivered wasn’t even functional. Thousands of walkers having to use ONE port-a-potty? Uh, I don’t think so! Some people came down with hypothermia and had to be transported to the hospital. The rest of us cold and wet walkers were transported by buses miles away to a high school gymnasium so we could bed down for the night. It just seemed to be one disaster after another. Yep, not at all what we signed up for.

By midnight that night, still no dinner in our bellies, my walking partner and I were in our own homes in our own beds. I don’t know how Pam felt, but I felt like a total loser. My boyfriend at the time didn’t help me feel any better because, after all, he had told all his coworkers I was walking in this event – not one of them donating any funds, mind you – and he was only worried about saving face with them!

First thing in the a.m. the phone rang, and it was Pam telling me to get my walking shoes on, her husband was taking us to the location to meet up with the walkers that day. From this point on, the Avon walk became everything we had heard it would be: inspiring, emotional, uplifting, fulfilling . . . Cheerleading squads, motorcycle clubs, policemen, firemen, children -- people from all walks of life were cheering us on. We were amazed how many hundreds, if not thousands, of people would line the streets clapping for us and literally thanking us for walking that day. “Thank you for walking.” “Thank you for walking.” We were made to feel like heroes. And all we had to do was walk.

The best part, of course, was waiting in the stadium at the end of Day 3 for all the ladies in the pink jerseys, THE heroes, the breast cancer survivors, to come walking in. This definitely was one of the most memorable moments of my life, one I won’t ever forget.

I have a wonderful man in my life who doesn’t mind all the time I devote to my pet “stuff” and my shop. There are three dogs in our household who keep me company as I spend many hours at the keyboard. The dogs will wag their tails and get excited when I tell them I’m making “pretty baskets” which will help the doggies. They will ride in the pet mobile with me as I deliver packages to be shipped to gift recipients all across the United States. Somehow they seem to understand it all. Or maybe they’re happy because I’m happy doing what I love. I have a great Webmaster who has guided me over the past year and captured my vision for the *new* gift shop. He knew what I wanted even if I didn’t.

As The Pet Guardian and now through the Kindred Spirits Gift Shop, I have been blessed to connect with many people over the years, many of whom have become great friends and whose friendships I cherish.

Who would know six years after my beloved dogs died what would be coming down the pike for me? The majority of those years were anything but a bed of roses. Losing my dogs and losing them in the manner I did broke my heart into a million pieces. I was so angry and bitter and incredibly sad. You can read a sampling of my life back then on The Pet Guardian Web site under Tasha & Niki’s story. I wouldn’t wish any of that on even my worst enemy. There are parts of my life while I was going through the grieving process that I just can't remember. Funny how your brain can protect you when what you are facing is just too much for you to handle.

Somehow, though, I knew I’d get through it, if only because I had been through the loss of my parents in my mid-20s and had experience with loss. So if and when you find yourself where I have been, you can believe me when I say, “I totally understand. I get it.” Because I do. I really do.

You’ll notice through the shop that I have a love of not only animals, but of angels and butterflies. I’ve chosen the butterfly as the symbol of my blog because to me the butterfly represents beauty, changes, taking flight, simplicity, and peace. At first, it is an ugly caterpillar and no one will give it a second look. But with time and dedication, it becomes something marvelous to the human eye. It is a natural wonder.

So, with my life, after getting through some tough times, a butterfly just reminded me of myself, actually. I had to take time and appreciate what I had and what I hope to be in the future. It is a symbol of hope for the animals and what I can do to make their lives better.

Let this be a welcoming place of feelings, hope, and joy.
